Yoga Helps to Burn Calories and Aid in Weight Loss

Yoga has become a rage in the Western world thanks to several yoga gurus who spread the awareness of this ancient Indian form of exercise. Exactly how many calories you would burn by performing yoga depends on several factors. Having said that, it is important to understand that calorie expenditure calculation is not an exact science. You can only come up with estimates and those too would differ depending on your manner of calculation.

YogaGenerally speaking calories burnt by a body is computed using the body mass index of a person along with the intensity of   activity and the overall time span of the activity. So if we were to make a sweeping estimate, assuming that you are 150 pounds in weight and you have been performing moderate intensity yoga for 20 minutes, chances are that you would have burnt approximately 90 calories or so. But then every person’s metabolic rate – the number of calories your body burns to sustain your activities – is different.

Yoga was found more useful for improvement of musculoskeletal fitness. If calorie burning is what you are looking for, you might want to add other forms of exercises to your yoga regime.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that the number of calories you burn will be influenced by several factors:

(a) Your personal ability to burn off calories. The amount of energy you will use to burn calories at a particular heart rate is very individualistic. For example, a fat person will burn more number of calories and at a faster pace than a thin person.

(b) The duration of exercise. Even moderate exercises like in yoga can end up burning enough calories if done over a longer period of time. It is the net calorie burn that you should ideally go after. Even moderate loss of calories achieved over a longer duration can prove useful in the long run as what you would have achieved will be more permanent in nature. Remember, that a lot of weight loss in short spurts that is touted by many is actually the immediate loss of water in your body that happens after rigorous bouts of workout. This type of weight loss unfortunately will promptly be replaced by your body. It can be frustrating to see the weight loss keep coming back.

(c) Along with time, the intensity of the exercise will also contribute to calorie burning. In this case, it will depend on the kind of yoga being performed. Strenuous exercises like Ashtanga yoga will get your heart rate up faster and burn more calories than low intensity yoga exercises like vinyasa or meditative yoga. Pranayam or breathing exercise helps to breathe in oxygen and get the negative energy out of your system. It acts as a cleanser and also aids to balance the chakras in the body.

(d) Yoga Diet– there is nothing like a yoga diet. It would be better if you become a vegan during your weight loss routine. This will help you to not add on calories that meat and beef will do. If you’re able to burn the fat by working out then you can go in for lean meat and tuna fish that are low calorie foods. A healthy yogic diet consists of fruits and vegetable salads, brown rice and yoghurt. But that doesn’t mean you have to abstain from enjoying your favorite dishes.

Drink plenty of water or juice after a session of yoga. This will help to flush out the toxins from your body. Since yoga works both on the body and mind levels, not only do you lose weight your face also starts glowing. This is proven and can be experienced by you too.

When thinking of calorie burn do note that usually the first 10 minutes or so of your exercise routine will be taken up to warm up the body especially in the slower types of yoga. So you might want to separate   warm up time from the actual 20 minutes of the yoga that you practice. That way you are sure that the 20 minutes you spend on yoga do burn some calories. This is certainly better than not doing anything. Besides, while performing yoga you would have gained an overall feeling of wellness both in body and mind which in the end is more valuable than the calories you lose.
