The 3 Week Diet

Why do some of us Enjoy Extreme Physical Activities?

It starts with a two and a half mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, and finishes with a full 26.2 mile marathon. You might have heard of Ironman contests, but what would possibly prompt someone to wanting to undertake such a mammoth task? It’s one thing to get involved in some exercise to improve your general fitness, but why do some people need intimidating physical challenges to get them engaged?

It might be difficult to understand, but there’s no shortage of examples of people taking on risky and exhausting physical challenges for fun. While gentle exercise might be the most rewarding for some, the adrenaline rush that more exciting activities can promote can give some the adrenaline rush they need. Whether it’s a skydive, a trek across the North Pole or an Ironman contest, many people say that sports and physical activities give them a feeling that cannot be replicated any other way. Not only that, but many people say they have to keep pushing themselves further in order to get that feeling.

Luckily, there is no shortage of ways of frightening yourself these days. It seems that each week some loon has created another extreme sport, flying a bike on a kite or surfing on concrete. For some, nothing gives them the same thrill and adrenaline rush as extreme heights. A skydive is one of the most exhilarating experiences a person can have, and jumping out of a plane at 14, 000 feet is hard for anyone to do, no matter how hard you try to rationalise the risk. For beginners, bungee jumps or tandem skydives are probably a better starting point.

Recently Dutchman Jarno Smeets fooled the world with a video of himself taking flight with a prosthetic pair of bird wings. In the fourteenth part of the film, after watching the wings being constructed, we see Smeets flap the wings attached to his shoulders and take flight over the countryside. The film caught the imagination of many people, who could finally see a man fly. After garnering thousands of views and attention, ‘Smeets’, who turns out to be filmmaker Floris Kaayk, admitted he worked with a video production company on the film for eight months.

While many people have looked into designing a pair of flying wings for men, the problem of finding both wings and men strong enough has never been solved. Man might not be able to fly, but it seems we’re constantly becoming more adept at falling and gliding with style.

Kite surfing is just one of the ways that you can take flight. Harnessing the power of the wind to propel themselves across the water, kitesurfers can reach great heights in the right weather conditions. They usually use a small surfboard or kiteboard and attempt to get the kite to lift them from the water. More recently wingsuits have gained popularity. They have wings on the sides to increase a person’s surface area, allowing them to glide on the wind and enjoy a shallow, downward trajectory. Wingsuit flights end with a parachute deployment, and are not for the faint-hearted.
