For those who suffer from headaches, it can be debilitating. Your regular routine if often interrupted and if the headache gets serious enough you could end up in bed, unable to function at all. Get hit with a major headache a few times a week and it could have a seriously negative affect on your life, your work and your family. And while some headaches go away in a matter of hours, others can linger for days.

When you feel a headache coming on, odds are you reach for some aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If the headache is bad enough you may have a prescription for a stronger pain medication, like codeine. But medications, be it over the counter or prescribed by your doctor, only treat the symptoms of the headache, not the cause. Obviously if there were a way that you could stop the headaches from happening at all, you’d take it, right? Well there is. It’s just something you may not have considered before.

ChiropractorWhen most people think of a chiropractor, they think of back and neck pain. After all, that’s what a chiropractor deals with, right? Yes and no. While a chiropractor does, in fact, deal with back pain, neck pain and spinal adjustments, there are a whole slew of other things that going to a chiropractor can help with, headaches being one of them.
Most headaches fall under two categories: tension headaches (which make up 80% of all headaches) and vascular headaches(migraine and cluster headaches). Both of these types of headaches can be alleviated by a trip to the chiropractor. And a quick adjustment. While chiropractors are probably not the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of a cure for your headaches, they should be.

Sometimes you may think you have a tension headache or a migraine when what you are actually experiencing is a cervicogenic headache. Cervicogenic headache originate in the neck, spine or shoulders and can have the same symptoms as the other two kinds of headaches. But regardless of the reasons for your headache (unless you have a tumour) visiting a chiropractor will help with the pain and prevent further headaches.

When you get an adjustment at a chiropractors, pressure is alleviated in your muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Muscles are less tense, nerves are pinched and your blood flows easier through your body. All three can be responsible for headaches. With less pressure in these areas of your body you will find that you suffer from headaches less frequently or maybe not at all.

Studies show that getting an adjustment from a chiropractor has the same results or even better results that taking medications when it comes to alleviating the pain of a headache. Spinal and neck adjustments also last longer that traditional medications when it comes to helping with headaches. It’s also a safer way of treating headaches because not only is it good for ALL of your body, you aren’t putting medications into your system that could have side affects. The only side affect from seeing a chiropractor is that you will feel better over all and have less headaches.

Dealing with headaches -sporadic or chronic – is never a fun thing. Headaches can be disruptive and debilitating. And while it may seem like the easiest and quickest way to deal with a headache is to pop a pain killer, consider going to a chiropractor instead. Not only will an adjustment be able to help you with your headaches, you’ll find that over all your body will just feel better.
